‘Eight Day Weekend’ of events and entertainment for Carnival 2005
Posted 17 Jun 2005
Saffron Walden will be treated to the most exciting, event-packed Carnival ever in 2005, with a jammed schedule of music, activities, contests, entertainment, and fun for the whole family from July 8 to 16th.
Organisers unveiled the complete line-up for the Carnival ‘Eight Day Weekend’ at a sold-out launch party in the Town Hall on Saturday night. Chairman Eamon McCourt revealed that reggae rockers Aswad will share the stage with Tony Hadley at the Final Night Party on 16 July, after performances over the week by acts including Dublin’s own film stars The Commitments; Carnival favourites the Blues Brothers Revue; salsa sensation Manteca, who jazzed up the town square last August; and the outrageous seventies disco tribute act Uncle Funk, who rocked the Town Hall on Saturday.
There’s more. Carnival 2005 presents Club Night, dubbed Common Euphoria; Ladies Night, with the New Official UK Dreamboys; Race Night; and Corporate Night. In the Town Hall, see the Carnival Show, Gonna Rise Up Singing, performed by the SW Amateur Operatic Society, and A Decade Younger, featuring a fashion show and extreme make-overs. Family Fun Day on the Common is packed with entertainment for the whole family; Super Sports Sunday offers colourful excitement for all.
“An important part of our remit for Carnival is to provide a superlative event for the town,” says Carnival Chairman Eamon McCourt. “With the programme of entertainment and events we have lined up, there is something for everyone at Carnival 2005. At the same time, we should raise princely sums for local worthy causes.” Carnival 2002 raised about £30,000.
Carnival’s Eight Day Weekend kicks off with the Carnival Queen competition on 8 July, but the first big event is the procession on the 9th. “Early indications are that the procession will be heavily subscribed,”
Mr McCourt says. “The parade, with its 1940s theme, will include vintage cars, dray horses, marching bands (including a 58-piece bagpipe corps) and majorettes, and scores of floats from near and afar. Procession entry forms will be available at the Caravan launch this Saturday.”
Tickets for all events will go on sale on Saturday, 4 June at the Carnival Caravan, which will become a fixture in the Market Square until Carnival begins. The Caravan Launch this Saturday will also feature balloons for the children and a chance to see Hocus Crocus, the Carnival character, up close.
