A little about Hart's Books.
Hart's Books carries on a proud Saffron Walden tradition. The Hart's name dates back to 1836, when Henry Hart founded W Hart & Son as the town's printers, and his original printing press can still be seen today at Saffron Walden Museum. Over the years the business grew to become the town's favourite retailer of stationery, musical instruments and books, until the original bookshop closed in 2008.
Today's Hart's Books brought bookselling back to the town, in a shop on King Street right next door to Hart's Yard, the original birthplace of the business. The shop is part of Daunt Books, and was the first Daunt branch to open outside London.
From the street it looks small and modest, but step inside and it opens up like a Tardis, with a wide selection of fiction, non-fiction and children's books to explore. Customers regularly praise the friendly, knowledgeable staff and personal touches such as bookmarks and canvas bags. The shop also hosts regular events, including book launches and author talks.
Hart's Books is dog friendly, so four-legged book lovers are welcome too.
