A little about Saffron Screen Cinema.
Saffron Screen is an independent community cinema and registered charity, founded in 2006, and the only cinema in Saffron Walden. It's based within Saffron Walden County High School on Audley End Road, and is open to the public outside school hours. Run with the help of volunteer projectionists, it can screen films on both digital projectors and traditional 35mm film.
The programme is wonderfully varied, with mainstream releases, independent and art-house films, world cinema and children's favourites. There are also live and recorded broadcasts of cultural events from around the world, including theatre, opera, ballet and concerts, alongside Q&As, guest speakers and special events. Dementia-friendly and autism-friendly screenings are also offered.
The auditorium has 200 comfortable seats, a full-size screen and Dolby Digital surround sound. Refreshments include popcorn, sweets and ice cream, many sourced locally from Saffron Wholefoods and Saffron Ice Cream, along with hot drinks, and alcohol is served on Friday and Saturday nights and at most event screenings.
Parking is free on site, though spaces can be limited on evenings when there are events at the neighbouring Saffron Hall. Doors open 30 minutes before each screening, and the school gates are locked shortly after the last film ends.
