Saffron Walden has been a market town for centuries, with a market held here since 1141. In medieval times the town was even known as Chepyng Walden, meaning Market Walden, and trading remains at the heart of town life today.
The market is held every Tuesday and Saturday throughout the year in the attractive, traffic-free Market Place. The Tuesday market has a more traditional feel, while the Saturday market is more cosmopolitan. The sheer range of stalls is the market's greatest strength, with fruit and vegetables, olives, bread, wholefoods, fresh fish, flowers, antiques and collectables, clothing, jewellery and plenty more to discover.
The market's quality has been recognised nationally.
